In celebration of VA Commission for the Arts Minds Wide Open Celebration of Children and the Arts, Target Gallery will host an exhibition that focuses on interactive, kinetic, toy inspired art. This is an all media show that examines the art of the toy, open to all artists nationally and internationally.

Prescott Trudeau is the full-time Curator of Children’s Museum of the Arts (CMA), a non-profit museum located in Lower Manhattan. The museum’s mission is to extend the benefits of the arts to all children and their communities and does so through a variety of programs, including professional exhibitions of both adult’s and children’s artwork. Prescott’s past exhibitions include Art Within Reach: From the WPA to the Present, an exhibition of children’s art created during the 1930s under the auspices of the WPA’s Federal Art Project alongside children’s art created in 2010 and Make Art (In) Public, an exhibition exploring the impact of the arts on building and bettering communities, with participating artists Swoon, Christo & Jeanne-Claude, Keith Haring, Friedensreich Hundertwasser, Remed, Tranqui Yanqui, and Moondog. He is currently planning CMA’s next exhibition, which will feature new work by the Japanese artist Misaki Kawai.

This is an Open Call for proposals for an exhibition at Target Gallery, located at The Torpedo Factory art center in Alexandria, VA, in the summer of 2012. This call is open to all artists from North America working in all visual media. Proposals for exhibitions by both individuals and groups will be considered. The individual or group associated with the chosen proposal will receive a solo exhibition at the Target Gallery from August 4 - September 2, 2012. The artist/s will also receive a stipend and an exhibition catalog. Jurors are Jack Rasmussen, Catriona Fraser, and David Page.
Jack Rasmussen is the Director and Curator of the American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center in Washington, DC. In addition he has also taught painting, curatorial practice, and arts programming, and worked as the university’s associate director of development from 1983 to 1987.

Catriona Fraser is an international award winning photographer and the Director of the Fraser Gallery. The Fraser Gallery exhibit the work of local, national and international artists with an emphasis on contemporary realism and photography.

David Page is an award winning, South African born, Baltimore based sculptor. His work is included in The Teaching Collection at St. Mary’s College, the permanent collection at the Baltimore Museum of Art and the collection of Nelson Mandela. His work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally including The Touch Gallery at the National Gallery in Cape Town, South Africa, Delaware Center for Contemporary Arts and The Baltimore Museum of Art. He currently teaches at The Corcoran College of Art and Design and is represented by Jordan Faye Contemporary since 2006.

Third Annual Book Artist Exhibit: Feb. 1 deadline

Illahe Studios and Gallery is requesting entries by Feb. 1, 2012 for its Third Annual Artist Book exhibit, to take place April 6-28, 2012 in honor of National Poetry Month (April).
The show will celebrate the art of the word, in the form of Artist Books. Works submitted for this exhibit should display original design and execution. Submissions will be reviewed, and artists will be notified of accepted works.
Entry Requirements
"Artist Books" entries to be considered for this exhibition must be original works of art created as a book. Submissions can be one-of-a-kind books or works from small editions and may be based in any of the following mediums or combinations of mediums: poetry, prose, printmaking, painting, calligraphy, mixed media, photography, sculpture, textile, found objects, and letterpress printing. Blank books or journals will not be accepted. Submitted work must have been created within the past two years.

Art works must be ready to exhibit and sell. Any special requirements for display or handling must be specified. Due to limited space and pedestals, works may not exceed 16” x 16” x 24”. A maximum of three pieces may be submitted for review.

Contemporary Indigeneity: The New Art of the Great Plains

The Great Plains Art Museum announces a juried exhibition focusing on Native American culture in the Great Plains region. Founded in 1980, the Great Plains Art Museum is home to a large collection of historical and contemporary works by Native North American artists. The Museum regularly hosts exhibitions that focus on contemporary Native identity as well as historical Native issues.

This is the first juried exhibition hosted by the Great Plains Art Museum, by which we seek to enhance knowledge and appreciation about Native American contemporary arts in the Great Plains today. Eligible works should express some element of North American Indigenous Culture and have a contemporary or historical significance and placement within the Great Plains of North America.

Works submitted for the juried exhibition must reflect the mission of the Great Plains Art Museum. The Great Plains Art Museum’s mission is:

In keeping with the research, teaching, and outreach missions of the Center for Great Plains Studies and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the mission of the Great Plains Art Museum is to collect, preserve, research, and interpret the art and literature of the Great Plains region and to foster study and enhance appreciation, through changing exhibits and public programs, the history and creative spirit of the Great Plains of North America.

This exhibition is expected to include the works of well- and lesser- known individuals whose work expresses the texture of Native American life in the Great Plains today. Selected by jury, this exhibition strives for a broad-ranging exploration which conveys the spectrum of contemporary visual art and fine craft in the Great Plains region, with a special emphasis on Native American culture. Water Street Studios announces a call for entries to its first of many themed show, "illuminate".illuminate will explore light in all of its forms and is open to conceptual interpretation: mechanically lit pieces are welcome, as are depictions of luminescence, as well as conceptual pieces. Work in all media accepted. This will be a dimly lit show, with the gallery's house lights off and sporadic track lights on.

Also exhibited will be work in the additional 3,800 sq ft space adjacent to the gallery. This space will have all its lights off and will feature work that is self-illuminating. Large sculpture and installations are welcome.

The show will begin at 6 pm (5pm for members) and Best of Show will be announced at 7pm in the main floor gallery. Of the many artists who submit for the show, the jury panel will select several Honorable Mentions Artists and one Best of Show.

Who: Craft Alliance, a non-profit arts education center in St. Louis, MO that offers programs and exhibitions showcasing contemporary craft.

What: Artist-in-Residence Program for emerging or mid-career artists with a body of work in clay, small metals or fiber.

Where: Craft Alliance in the Kranzberg Arts Center (located in the Big Brothers Big Sisters building, corner of Grand Blvd and Olive St) in Grand Center, an historic cultural district in the city of St. Louis.

When: Residencies will begin June 4, 2012. Postmark deadline is January 23, 2012. Applications also reviewed on a rolling basis.

Program Description At A Glance:

Residencies available for 3, 9 or 12 months.

All associated utilities will be absorbed by Craft Alliance.
Artists have the opportunity to showcase their work once a year in a special exhibition.
Artists can sell work from their studio space, through Craft Alliance.
Selected artists will be compensated for classes they teach and may apply for job openings at Craft Alliance.

Artists Are Required To:

Work in their studios for a minimum of 20 hrs/wk, concentrated during public hours, Wednesday – Sunday. The lower level Education Center is open to visitors, who are invited to interact with artists and purchase their work through Craft Alliance.
Work a minimum of 5 hours/wk. on studio maintenance.
Act as studio monitor for open studio sessions. (Schedule varies by studio)
Pay for their housing and living expenses and the costs of materials associated with producing their work.

Dutchess County Art Association - Barrett Art Center presents New Directions '12, the 27th Annual National Juried Contemporary Art Exhibition. Juried by Susan Cross, Curator, Mass MoCA. Open to all U.S. artists working in 2D and 3D media, including but not limited to drawing, painting, pastel, printmaking, photography, mixed media, and sculpture. Work previously exhibited at DCAA/BAC is ineligible. Work must have been completed within the last 4 years. The Open Studios Press sponsors 6 competitions per year. Winners receive full color spreads in our nationally distributed periodical New American Paintings. We have divided the country into 5 regions (Northeast, South, Midwest, West and Pacific Coast), each of which is the focus of an annual competition, and have recently added a sixth competition for students enrolled in a US passed MFA program.

Our competitions are open to all artists working within the United States. All styles and media are welcome, as long as the work is singular and two-dimensional. This competition is open to all artists who live in one of the following states: AL, AR, DC, FL, GA, KY, LA, MD, MS, NC, SC, TN, VA, WV.

The Upstream People Gallery presents an exhibition with 12 month's gallery representation, February 1, 2012 through January 31, 2013, with approximately one million hits each month. Open to all artists worldwide with 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional realistic or representational artwork in all media and creative processes (except video/film).

Cash Awards of Excellence and Special Recognitions will be given at the juror's discretion; the amounts and number of which is determined by the entries and their quality. Specially recognized artists will be reviewed in the juror's statement published worldwide and sent in a press release to the artist's local newspaper(s).
